Missions Ministry

Our Missions/Outreach Team is led by Harold Caswell, a veteran of putting the love of Christ in action in the states and abroad. Much of what we do is geared toward helping those in need who live in our area, and extending that help and spreading the Gospel outside of Delaware. Here are some of what we're presently doing.

  • Emergency Food Pantry - There are times when the money is just not there to purchase what we need to feed our families. We at Whatcoat understand, and members donate foodstuffs to our pantry that's available to families referred to us by Catholic Social Services.

  • Helping With the Homeless - Dave J. can be contacted if you'd like to help. He can explain various ways we lend a hand.

  • Easter & Christmas Food Baskets - Members of our congregation donate canned goods and more to compliment the turkey/ham, dessert, etc. that's packed in a new laundry basket to be given to local families in need.

  • Angel Food Ministry - Helping those in our community to make their food dollars stretch. This is an area where very little training is required in order to lend a hand, and no long term commitment is asked. You can read more about this ministry HERE. If you'd like to donate a couple hours once a month on a Saturday morning helping distribute the food boxes contact Tracey H.M.

  • Backpacking Ministry - Here's where our church provides food for children in need during the school year weekends when they don't have breakfast and lunch provided to them in school. The commitment requires purchase of foodstuffs, picking the backpacks up from the school on Mondays, packing them with foodstuffs on Thursday evening, and then delivering them to the school on Friday morning each week of the school year. If you'd like to lend your time to this outreach contact Harold C. or Kris K.

  • Project Angeltree - Children of those incarcerated in Kent County, DE are the people to whom this ministry is targeted. Many times these children grow up in a household where they don't hear the Gospel message, and through no fault of their own, won't find anything under their Christmas tree. A "Birthday Party for Jesus" is held the week before Christmas, and presents which were purchased by members of our congregation are given to the children who requested them. The children take part in a Nativity play following the lunch. We may never know the long term effects of this ministry, but we hope that the seed of faith takes root. Max W. heads up this ministry.

  • Flood Buckets - This is a UMC ministry that we participate in. A set list of supplies are purchased and placed in a bucket to enable people to begin the overwhelming job of cleaning up after a flood or hurricane.

  • Youth Mission Trip - Whatcoat's Youth participate in a week long mission trip each summer, lending a hand in fixing up a home of those who can't afford to contract the work out, or perhaps running Vacation Bible School in a small church in Appalacia.

  • Nothing But Nets - This is a global, grassroots campaign to raise awareness and funding to combat malaria, one of the largest killers of children in Africa. With a $10 contribution, Nothing But Nets provides individuals from CEOs to youth, professional athletes to faith leaders the opportunity to join the global fight against malaria by sending a net and saving a life.

  • Sun Valley Indian School in Arizona -
